When it comes to growing your business, usually a lot of anxiety and stress comes with it. Asking for money for your services can be super scary, but you started your business for a reason. You LOVE boudoir and you have an incredible talent when it comes to photography. There is no reason why you shouldn't be paid for your service! Here are some tips to help you get started on the right foot.
Procrastination can completely ruin your day. When you are nervous, it's really easy to procrastinate those phone calls, editing, and writing that blog post. It's easy to find something else to do or an excuse for not doing it. Sometimes the fear can get you down and you think you'll just do it later when you feel better. Stop this attitude quickly, before it becomes a habit. The more you procrastinate, the longer your to do list gets.
Once clients start rolling in, you won't have time to sit on things for too long. Having a good working system in place now, will save you tons of headaches down the road.
I start my list by anything that has a date deadline. For example if a client's order needs to be ready for her to review in a matter of days, her order will move to the top of my list. Everything goes down the list in matter of importance. Things without set details get done when I reach that point of my to do list. It might not some like a very romantic way of doing things, but setting yourself up with time management skills will save you so much trouble down the road.
When it comes to starting any kind of business, it is so important to know your numbers. If you just wing it, chances are you don't know if you are successful or not. You may feel like you are doing awful but you may be bringing in more money than you think. Keep track of everything. Know how much you need to cover your bills each month. This will help you create income goals and even give yourself a raise every now and then. Don't be afraid to know what you are making, it's an important step to having a successful business.
When starting, make sure you know what you need to cover your bills and what your ideal income would be (even if you aren't close to making that just yet!). Be sure to include all your expenses, such as printing costs, the time it takes to edit an image, the gas it takes driving to and from shoots. I constantly see photographers focus solely on personal bills and expenses, and forget how much will actually be eaten away by their business.
Even if they are small goals, be sure to write them down! As you cross more and more things off, your confidence is going to grow. Being able to see yourself actually accomplish what you set out to do is an amazing feeling, be proud of yourself! Creating a business and rocking it is hard work, but you are completing those goals. It is definitely something to feel good about.
Goals can be anything from doing a model shoot to getting an Instagram page started focus only on boudoir. Every step matters!
