This may seem like a no brainer but having a camera and a computer is essential to starting a boudoir business! Whatever you may need to do the work is so important. You can always update and buy more later down the road but you want to start out with basic equipment so you can begin shooting. A camera and a computer will allow you take on clients and edit their images as well as emailing, etc. Don’t feel like you need all different types of cameras and lights before you start - you can always find ways to get around that and shoot with natural light.
When you start your photography business, there are a lot of things that you may be questioning but contracts shouldn’t be one of them! Contracts are so important! They protect you as well as your clients. Even if you are doing model sessions with friends and family, make sure you have them sign a contract and model releases so that you can ensure that you are both covered. Contracts ensure that the client will show up when they are supposed to, they will be paying a specific amount by a certain date, and the terms that go with that session. You don’t want to get burned by clients because you didn’t have them sign a contract!
I get asked a lot if I have insurance for my business and my answer is yes! It’s important to make sure that your business is protected. If you have a studio and expensive equipment, I highly recommend it! It’s one of those things that you probably won’t need it if you have it but you don’t want to have something happen and not have it. Depending on where you shoot, some places require that you carry insurance. If you are doing weddings on the side of boudoir, you will definitely need it! Be sure that your clients are also covered under your insurance policy as well.
Depending on what state you are in, you may need a license to start. Every state, county and city differ from each other. Check out your local laws to see what you will need to register your business and what you need to get it up and running. It’s important to do this ahead of time so that you don’t get caught or fined for not having the right licensing in place.
A website may not seem that important but I promise you that it is! You should have a basic website set in place for potential clients to find your contact information, check out your portfolio, and more. You can always update and change your website as you grow but it’s so important to have something set in place when you start. It will also make you look more professional!
